Even though HPV in men is deemed low risk, some of the virus types lead to the development of genital warts, which could be quite difficult to manage. The two of the HPV types that are responsible for 90% of the warts are HPV 6 and HPV 11, while there are more than thirty other strains that form the remaining 10%. The signs and symptoms are not always present and a man could be infected, without even suspecting it. The warts themselves are diagnosed by a physician, who conducts visual examination, during which he might treat the infected area with acetic solution in order to make them visible.

HPV in men does not present great health risk as HPV in women, but all of the available treatment options only address the visible symptoms and do not remove the virus. New therapies that are aiming at improving the infected men's immune system, which could then successfully fight off the HPV in men are being tested and could be approved in the near future. Until then, removing the warts with topical treatments, laser ablation, surgery, or electrocution are amongst the most commonly used options.
